Nothing quite like a bit of illness to make you appreciate a good night's sleep and the ability to breathe clearly.

First, Vivi came home from day care with a cold, which managed to become both a sinus infection and strep throat, then right as she was about to kick it, I managed to catch it from her. My mum has been visiting to help care for Vivi while I've been laid up feeling completely ill. Even with seeing a Healer and taking enough pepper-up potion (and drinking plenty of orange juice) that I felt like my eyeballs were swimming in it. But now we're both feeling fully better just in time for the Hestia's Hearth carnival this weekend. Vivi's been looking forward to going, so I'm glad we'll be able to.

I also just got an invitation for the Magpies' New Year's party. That sounds fun, but with a three-year-old, I'm not sure I have it in me to stay awake until midnight anymore!

I have a feeling that Vivi just might lapse into a sugar coma tonight. We got back from trick or treating just a little bit ago, and her bag is suspiciously light. But that's what Halloween is all about, isn't it? Dressing up in a costume and getting enough free candy to power hundreds of sugar highs.

Of course, I can't just sit back and relax because the doorbell keeps ringing every few minutes with other trick or treaters wanting candy. I'm almost tempted to put the bowl of candy out on the porch with a "take a piece" sign, though that would mean I'd miss out on seeing the other kids' costumes.

Vivi, by the way, was an adorable little black cat. She had the meow down and everything.

Well, I feel so embarrassed. I brought my journal with me when Vivi and I went to France over a month ago, and promptly forgot about it completely. When we got back a couple weeks ago, I couldn't find it anywhere around the house. I was so positive that I had lost it, and then I got a package this morning from my mum. Somehow, it managed to get wedged under the sofa in the sitting room, and she found it yesterday evening when she was giving the whole house a good cleaning.

Visiting my family in France was wonderful, of course. Vivi loved seeing her grandparents and her uncle, and we took day trips to Paris, and to the beach, and even an amazing day trip into Spain with my brother.

We are glad to be home now, though. And I am very glad to not have run into Julien.

I have some vacation time saved up, so in about a week, Vivi and I will be headed to France to visit her grandparents for a couple weeks. Usually, my parents and Lucien come visit us here, so she's never actually been to France. I haven't even been back there since I moved back here, so it should be a lot of fun. I'm really excited to take Vivi there for the first time. At the very least, she'll get to eat in her grandfather's restaurant for the first time.

Vivi and I have come to the conclusion that summer is the best time of year because it means we can spend extra time outside playing in the backyard before it gets dark. Today she decided that the small pile of rocks by the fence was the home castle of some friendly fairies, so we decorated it for them with flowers and leaves.

I don't know if I was so imaginative at her age.

Vivi has an ear infection. She was fussy and tugging at her ear all afternoon and evening, so I took her to St. Mungo's. The healer gave her some medicine that was supposed to help her sleep, but it seems to be doing the opposite. She's obviously tired, and it is almost midnight, but she won't go to sleep. We just finished watching Monster's Inc and are about to start in on Finding Nemo.

Work tomorrow is not going to be fun. I might have to call in and see if I can just work from home for the day. At least then I can steal quick naps during the day.

Any other parents on here have any good tricks for getting a fussy toddler to go to sleep?

Vivi and I just had some fun in the kitchen this evening.

Spell-o-taped picture. )

Anyone want any? We made a lot and I prefer my daughter not completely hopped up on sugar.
